Samenvatting

Several studies associate a good working alliance in the forensic context with positive outcomes such as recidivism reduction. This article reports on a qualitative study on the use of the working alliance at two probation agencies in the Netherlands. 24 probation officers and 6 clients were interviewed.
The probation officers consider the working alliance important, and they have mostly implicit knowledge about it. In their perspective they build a working alliance with their client by providing clarity and being reliable and transparent. To increase bonding, they connect with clients and discuss the work alliance when there is stagnation. Systematic evaluation of the working alliance is largely lacking. Education about the working alliance deserves improvement.
