Samenvatting
Suriname has a significant diaspora economy, with its primary diaspora residing in The Netherlands. Diaspora Direct Investment (DDI) refers to investments by Surinamese individuals living abroad, who often leverage their expertise to encourage foreign companies to invest in Suriname or to collaborate with startups in their home country. DDI is distinct from FDI in its emphasis on social embeddedness and a heightened sense of community impact, which is intrinsic to returning migrants. This article explores the efficacy of DDI and its positive impact on economic development, especially during economic downturns. The benefits of DDI are evidenced by brain gain, technology transfer, mentorship, market-driven economies, and other factors. However, DDI in Suriname also faces challenges such as high crime rates, government corruption, and concerns about quality of life, safety, and healthcare. The Suriname Investment and Trade Agency (SITA) plays a crucial role in encouraging DDI by implementing measures to ensure parity with FDI. Establishing a Diaspora Fund, managed by SITA, could help overcome these challenges by providing due diligence, analysis, and screening for approval of potential projects.
